Walking Trails Lefkada
Sivota on the south side of Lefkada Island is our year-round home and base for our walking holidays in the Greek Islands.
Lefkada Island is located between Corfu Island and Kefalonia Island and is surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea.
The island has a dramatic landscape with vertical rocky cliffs, mountainous areas with valleys and gorges leading to some beautiful,
traditional and friendly Greek villages.
One of our favorite walking trails on Lefkada is from the small port of Nikiana. The trail asends slowly up to the village of Kolivata.
This is an ancient path, known locally as 'monopati', and winds its way through ancient oak forests. There are
some amazing views from the trail over-looking the turquise water of the Ionian Sea towards Meganisi Island and beyond.
Kolivata is known as the hidden gem of Lefkada Island and is a charming village with ancient architecture and traditional
Greek atmosphere. Enjoy wondering through the narrows streets as it's like stepping back in time.
Another great walk is the walking trail to the Nidri Waterfalls. We start at the port of Nidri and follow the trail through
olive groves, entering the forested area and following the river up to the waterfalls. The water is so fresh and clear, very
tempting to have a quick dip in the pools at the bottom of the falls.
There are many walking trails on Lefkada Island including coastal routes, waterfalls, springs and ancient ruins, with many passing through
olive groves and untouched nature.
Walking Trails Meganisi
Meganisi is an island of natural beauty with lush green vegetation and many bays and lies to the east of Lefkada, seperated
by the Meganisi channel and Skorpios Island, and is one of the most picturesque islands in the Ionian Sea.
There are three main villages on the island of Meganisi. Vathy which is the main port of Meganisi home to local fishing boats
and yachts. Spatochori, which is located on a cliff overlooking the sea where you have some great views of Skorpios Island and beyond.
Katomeri village is on the hillside above little Vathy and has a maze of narrow streets, with vibrant colourful flowers decorating
the traditional stone houses and is home to many of the locals on the island.
There are many great walking trails on Meganisi, the highlights are the traditional villages, olive groves, coastal paths
and sea caves. The most famous sea cave is Papanikoli cave which was used as a hiding place for submarines during World War two.
Walking Trails Kalamos
Kalamos Island is a mountainous island known for its lucious vegetation and tall vertical pine trees which grow right up to the
coastline with beaches of smooth white pebbles leading into the clear blue sea.
Kalamos offers a number of great walking trails, one being a walking trail following the forested coastline between the villages of
Episkopi in the north and Kalamos Port and over to the amazing Agrapidia beach with its old seafront windmill and clear blue water.
Highlights of this walking trail includes the Venetian Castle of Kalamos from 13th century BC, Greek Chapels, windmills, forest
areas and the quaint village of Kalamos with is winding streets.
Another great walking trail is to the abandoned village of Kefali, with its Venetian name Porto Leone, abandoned after an earthquake
with ruins of a 13th-century castle, a testament to the island’s strategic importance in centuries past.
Walking Trails Kastos
Kastos is one of the least inhabited of the Ionian islands with around 50 permanant residents and lies to the east of Kalamos.
Highlights of Kastos Island include the ancient olive groves, old windmills, secluded bays with crystal clear
water and a small village. The walking trails on Kastos are easy to moderate, following the coastal paths along
the sea, visiting the small coves and beaches. The trail crossing Halkierini Hill to Poros Peak
offers some wonderful views towards Kalamos and the Greek mainland.
Walking Trails Ithaca
Ithaca lies to the east of Kefalonia and is one of the smaller islands of the Ionian Sea. It has large mountainous areas forested
with pine, oak and fir trees, leading down to multiple small secluded beaches and bays.
Ithaca is famous for its many walking trails including the famous Odysseus trail which pass through centuries old olive groves,
stone huts, chapels and windmills leading to different village and fishing ports spread along the amazing rugged coast.
The village of Stavros has amazing architectural buildings, a unique village square and houses a small reproduction of the
Odysseus Palace and is a great location to start a walking trail that heads toward the Odysseus Palace (also known as the
School of Homer). The walk offers amazing scenic views and a chance to see this eighth century BC palace.
At the site of the Odysseus Palace, there are the remains of several buildings dating back to the Mycenaean period as well as the ruins
of the church of St. Athanasios which was built on the ancient palace.
Other small villages that are worth a visit are Platrithias which is located near the Odysseus Palace and consists of traditional
venetian white houses as well as the small port town of Frikes which is located on the northwest of Ithaca, 5km from Kioni and 3km from
Stavros. The village was first inhabited in the 16th century and has two well maintained windmills that look down on the harbour.
Frikes is the harbour referred to by Homer as Reithron.
Kioni Port is a stunning mediterranean village, located in the north east of the island, has beautiful traditional buildings
lining the waters edge of the port which has some local tavernas, boutique shops and is a beautiful village to walk and explore.
Walking Trails Kefalonia
Kefalonia is one of the more well-known islands of the Ionian islands. It is one of the larger islands and has many beautiful places to visit.
The hills are covered with cypresses and Olive trees and the coastline is met by the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea.
There are some ancient sites to see, including the Venetian lighthouse and Roman cemetery in Fiscardo and the inland caves of Drogarati and
Melissani, near Sami. There are many great walking trails on this island, including our walk which starts from Fiscardo, a scenic, picturesque fishing
port and village in the north of the island.
Fiscardo has amazing examples of untouched traditional Ionian architecture, as it was one of the only villages that survived the
1953 earthquake. Our walk is a great circular route covering the northwest part of the peninsula passing through small villages, wooded areas
and exploring small bays and beaches. We also make a visit to the hidden tunnels of Foki bay, where they once stored ammunitions during wartime.
Other Islands in the area.
There are many other islands in the area including Skorpios, Atokos, Arkoudi, Thilia, Kythros, Formikoula and more, they don't all
have walking trails but they are worth a stop to swim and enjoy.
Skorpios Island is the most famous private island and was once owned by Greek shipping billionaire, Aristotle Onassis
who married Jacqueline Kennedy on the island.
Atokos Island is small and uninhabited and is known as 'the secret island'. The island is privately
owned but we can stop for a swim at the beautiful beaches where you may see a few wild goats and the family of black pigs.
