Walking Trails Meganisi Island
Meganisi is one of the most idyllic and charming islands in the Ionian Sea. The Island is wonderfully peaceful, making it a
favourite stop on our catamaran based walking holiday. Its coastline is dotted with hidden bays, crystal-clear swimming spots
and quiet anchorages, perfect for guests who want to unwind and experience authentic Greek island life.
Meganisi Island perfectly blends tranquillity, natural beauty and traditional Greek culture, making it one of the
most memorable stops on your holiday through the Ionian Islands.
Walking Trails
Meganisi offers a range of different walks from flat, coastal walks to walks that leading
through quaint local Greek villages.
Little Vathy, Port Atheni and Katomeri.
One of our walks start just outside Little Vathy from a lovely private beach front taverna.
We head towards Little Vathy, the islands main harbour and one of the prettiest ports in
the Ionian, passing alongside quaint little shops, waterside restaurants, coffee shops
and tavernas. We take the small pathway behind the local houses and follow the trail
towards Port Atheni, stopping at some scenic points to take photos. Leading down
towards Port Atheni, which is a great anchorage for yachts and local fishing boats, we
follow the path around the bay and then make our way to the east coast of the island to
a secluded beach.
Here you can enjoy a lovely refreshing swim in the Ionian Sea or just relax on the
beach. After a short break we then make our way to Katomeri, a quiet inland village,
with a lovely slow pace of life. Walk through the meandering streets to see the
traditional local Greek houses and wonderful colourful gardens. The views from
Katomeri to the neighbouring islands are spectacular, offering some lovely
photo opportunites. We then make our way back towards Little Vathy, maybe stopping along the way at a
traditional bakery or coffee shop to taste some of the local delights.
Spartochori and the west coast of Meganisi.
Starting at the bay of Spillia, we walk along the beach and up the forested hill towards
Spartochori, another beautiful quaint village on Meganisi, lined with tiny paths and
streets and picturesque stone houses. This village is a must see, and it also has a
spectacular viewpoint of the surrounding islands.
We then make our way out of the village and walk towards the west coast of the island,
amongst olive groves, cypress trees and wild herbs, including rosemary and thyme.
The path offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and the crystal-clear waters of
the Ionian Sea, before leading down towards the waters edge towards the chapel of
Agios Ionnis.
Enjoy a dip in the sea or relax on the beach, before walking along the coastline around
the northwest coast of the island back towards Spillia Bay. Keeping an eye out for
deer and other small animals such as tortoises.
